Locke and Berkeley Part 8 - Political Philosophy and Political Toleration
Locke is best known for his clarion call for religious and political toleration. He insisted that we do not really with absolute certainty much of anything so to speak in this life. In fact, he pointed out that we are wrong in life quite frequently and that we are therefore unjustified in imposing our opinions by force on anyone.
Locke's argument along these lines in his Essay becomes quite moving and quite passionate. He called for toleration especially with regard to religious beliefs. He contended that knowledge is frequently and individualistic issue and he countered that no one else can do much know on my behalf.
Locke acknowledged that others should pass opinions in the areas of ethics and religion and he proposed that people ought to spend time thinking things out for themselves as far as possible, but he also acknowledged that this is a difficult thing to do and therefore we must be tolerant of different points of view regarding these areas.
